House of Horrors (1946)

Part of The Creeper series, a somewhat lesser known Universal monster film trio, it stars Rondo Hatton as The Creeper himself. It’s a surprisingly rich film, really about struggling artist Marcel, who finds some dangerous ways to channel his rage when a few very snooty critics torch his career. The critics aeally are super jerky so it’s hard not to root for Marcel, ably played by recent German refuge Martin Kosleck, at least a little.

Also there’s Alan Napier for you Batman fans. Since this was a Svengoolie feature, he told the somewhat tragic story of Rondo Hatton himself respectfully and with the admiration for classic horror he’s known for. Love that Svengoolie!
